Weis Mystery Tour

Here is our belated documentation from our trip to Weis Markets in February. I left my camera at home so Gabriel's Mema took all these great pictures! Thanks for sharing!!

Our class ready to go inside!

We received our necessary items in the beginning:
-Detective Hats
-A magnify glass
-Notebook
-Pencil
-Grocery basket

We are ready to solve the mystery!

At each different food group section we discussed the servings needed and why we need those certain foods. Then, each group needed to find specific items to place in their basket.

The boys' basket.

Also, at most of the stations we each had a sample. Here the third graders are eating Kiwi. For some, it was a first! Yum!

Discussion time. :-)

Each station had a nice big poster board with all the information we needed!

Here the leaders are showing how many spoonfuls of sugar are in a regular can of soda- WOW.

Anna solving the mystery.

In the end, the students had to use their clues to fill in the blanks and solve the mystery!

-Eat right
-Exercise
-Have fun!

Each student took home a delightful bag with samples and coupons!

And it was such a nice day, we had to stop at the park for lunch and a little bit of play time. Here are the girls.

And the boys...

Gabriel and his Mema!

Stephanie is checking things out.

Being goofy and enjoying the warmth and sunshine!

Thankfully the snow is now GONE!

It was a really fun field trip and we are now looking forward to wrapping up our Nutrition unit!

Bread Bonanza!

Last week, we made bread with the second graders. They are learning how to measure and we are finishing up our nutrition unit so Mrs. Horst and I thought it would be a fun, healthy activity to do together!

Mrs. Horst helped guide us since we used her Grandma's yummy "Honey Wheat Bread" recipe.

Each of the students had an opportunity to help out in some way!
Gabriel looks pretty excited. :-)

Justin and Zac measuring out the flour.

Mrs. Horst giving important instructions and Dylan (from second grade) adding more flour.

Instead of using sugar, we used Honey to sweeten it up. Anna is carefully adding the "sweetness" to our bread. Yum.

Jessica is carefully adding the oil.

A different ingredient we used was called "lecithin". Mrs. Horst was letting the students smell
the "vanilla-like" scent.

While the bread was rising for the first time, the students worked on a bread facts sheet.

They also created raps which they performed for the classes later in the day!

Looks good!

The next step: Kneading the bread!

Johnny going to town!

And Stephanie took a few hits too!

This was at the end of the day- our finished product! Delish!

After all their hard work, the students enjoyed the bread with butter, jelly and juice! What a FUN day!

Below is the recipe if you would like to try it at home:

Honey Wheat Bread8 c. whole wheat flour
½ c. honey
¼ c. canola oil
1 T. salt
2 T. yeast – dissolved in ½ c. warm water
1 T. liquid lecithin
2 ½ c. warm water

First, dissolve yeast in ½ c. warm water. Set yeast aside while combining all other ingredients. Add yeast and knead (with a dough hook on electric mixer) for 10 minutes. Add flour if the dough is sticky. Knead on counter by hand for 10 minutes. Place dough in greased bowl and cover with a towel. Let rise one hour. Punch down dough and break into 3 equal balls. Shape into loaves and flatten each loaf with a rolling pin. Roll up the dough into a loaf shape and tuck ends under. Rub some oil on the loaves and place in greased/floured bread pans. Cover with towel and rise for 1 hour. Bake at 350 for 25-27 minutes or until brown on top. Rub some butter on the top of each loaf as soon as it comes out of the oven. Makes 3 loaves

Happy Fasnacht Day!

In celebration of Fasnacht Day (Fat Tuesday), we had Fasnacht donuts this morning!
Unfortunately, the place where I purchased them did not have any plain powdered ones, so we enjoyed glazed fasnachts.

And boy were they GOOD!
Zac thinks his donut goes very well paired with a glass of milk.

It was a fun way to start our morning!

Steven's Goodbye Party!

Our pictures from Steven's goodbye party!
It was a snowy day and only half of the class was here! We are so thankful we had the chance to celebrate with Steven!
What's a party without a cake? :-)
We celebrated appropriately with SNOWman, chocolate chip goodness.

Gabriel gave Steven a sweet T-shirt!

As a class, we also had a special gift for Steven...

opening.....

A class t-shirt! This was Steven's favorite picture from the year. We printed it on a t-shirt and all signed it!

This was a very fun day in Philadelphia.

Next, each student wrote a letter to Steven and had their picture taken with him. We bound them all together to make a nice little encouragement book for Steven.

We all enjoyed looking through it.

And of course we needed a silly shot at the end!

Steven was PUMPED about his new shirt! And apparently, so was Jessica! :-)

We pray for Steven every day and trust that the Lord is bringing some good friends into his life. We recently wrote him letters and are excited to hear back from him!

Belated Birthday Celebrations!!!

A LOT has happened since our last post! I think we have the difficulties figured out! I will do my best to get all of the updates up for you to see!

To start we celebrated the lives to two VERY SPECIAL people:

ANNA HECK
(February 13th)
We love the JOY and CREATIVITY you bring to our class. Your LAUGHTER and EXCITEMENT are contagious! Praying God uses that JOY to encourage many people!

She brought in YUMMY dirt pudding dessert! Delish!

Another great life we celebrated was...

JOHN OECHSLIN
(February 25th)

Our class would not be the same without your INSIGHT and DETAIL. We love your ENTHUSIASM and HUMOR. Praying that Jesus will use your gifts to reach others for HIS kingdom!

He also brought in some AMAZING brownies! :-)

Happy birthday Anna and John! I am SO SO glad the Lord allowed me to be your teacher this year!
