The EGG lady was here!! :-)

 Today, Mrs. Kathy Young (from Penn State 4-H program) came in to speak to our class. She is a "egg-spert" in the growth and development of eggs and wanted to share some cool information with us!

 

The first thing she did was show us jars with different stages of the embryo. These were embryos which did not make it, but died at a certain stage. It was really neat to be able to see in a clear jar how our eggs are developing each day. All these intricate details continue to point to our loving Father who thought through this WHOLE PROCESS!! WOW.

Today we also had the opportunity to "candle" the egg in order for us to be able to see inside. Mrs. Young held the egg up to the film strip projector and we could see the blood vessels and small embryo inside! We will continue to do this every two days so we can watch our chicks grow and develop!

What a COOL opportunity we had today! We were happy to hear that all ten of our eggs are healthy and alive!

Ask your student to tell you more about what we learned today and why the egg needs blood vessels, an air sac, water in the incubator and why we turn the eggs!

Our first field trip!

Our first field trip was a lot of fun! We started off at Herr's chip factory for the tour! We couldn't take any pictures on the tour (unfortunately), but we tried to get a few at the tour center.

 Here are all of the third graders! We had so much fun spending time with the third graders from the West Lampeter Campus!

 And one more of the happy troopers! We had warm potato chips fresh off the line and enjoyed seeing where all of the pretzels, popcorn, corn chips and other potato chips were made! It made us all hungry for lunch!

 This the the mascot- "Chip-Herr". They all call him Chipper!

 We headed to Nottingham park for some lunch. Thank you Lord for holding off the rain so we could enjoy some time outside! (Gabriel, Zavier, Timothy, Logan and Nathan)

 We had a scavenger hunt with our new Pen Pals! This year we are going to be working on our letter writing skills. In order to practice, we will be writing letters to the other third graders! Today we all had a chance to meet our Pen Pals and get to know them a little bit. (Timothy and Justin)

 One of the things they needed to find was someone who had a July birthday. The students couldn't find ANYONE (go figure). They even asked our bus driver! (Janae and Logan)

 Without writing spaces, the students were getting pretty creative on how they wrote their answers down. (Zavier and Anna)

 The Pen Pals worked hard together to accomplish everything on the list! (Jessica and Matthew)

 Despite this being the first time some of them met, the students worked really well together!I was so proud of them! (Ben and Stephanie)

 We ended with a name game where the students had to repeat everyone's name. They did SO WELL!

Overall, we had a wonderful time! We are looking forward to writing letters with the 3rd graders from West Lampeter and also looking forward to another field trip sometime soon!

The Eggs are Here!

The Eggs are Here!!

Today we placed our eggs in the incubator. We are doing this Embryology (the study of embryos) through the 4-H program of Penn State University. The students will be using one of their guides as we learn about the growth and development of an egg.

The incubator is set up in our room. It must stay between 99-103 degrees. There are thermometers inside of the incubator which will help us make sure the temperature is correct. (The mother hen usually sits on her eggs during the incubation period. This is God's natural way of the mother preparing her chicks for their arrival)

The students made a little "nest" for their egg today. We used pipe cleaners to help support the eggs so they can stay upright in the incubator. The students also made an "X" on one end and an "O" on the other end. The eggs will be turned three times a day and this will help the students know which end was up last. (Also, interesting fact- the mother hen uses her feet and beak to turn the eggs when she is sitting on them)

The eggs need to be turned three times a day. The students will take turns checking the eggs. They will mark the time, the temperature of the room and the incubator and make any observation of changes to the eggs.

Next Wednesday, we have a friend coming from Penn State to talk to us about the process and what is happening inside the egg. She will teach us how to "candle" the egg (put the egg in front of a film strip projector to actually see if the chick is growing). She will also teach us more about this process and share her experience with us.

We will do this for about 18 days. At the end of the 18 days, the chicks will start pecking away at the eggshells. We will then transport the chicks (once completely hatched) into a new home. After that, if anyone is interested in taking their chick home, please email me (lherr@lccs.cc) so I can know ahead of time. We need to find homes for the ones who will not go home with a student.

 2. We need volunteers to send in baked goods for our bake sale for Julio. Each year, the elementary supports a compassion child. Every month, an elementary class holds a bake sale during lunch to raise the money we need to pay our monthly dues. Our month is October and our bake sale will be on October 6th. Please send in cupcakes, cookies, puppy chow, etc on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 6th. Let me know if you will be able to contribute.

Today at the store we had candy, bouncy balls, notebooks and more. We also celebrated Justin's birthday. We had funnel cakes and ice cream!!!
