Cookie Time

This morning, two students from the High School Cooking class came into third grade! They read us a story about the history of Christmas Cookies and then we decorated cookies. The students have the choice to eat it today or share it with someone else. They look awfully yummy!!

The girls explained their plan for the morning.

Everyone was intently listening to the story.

The empty cookies which are ready to be decorated.

Loading on the icing!

Adding some sprinkles.

Lots of sprinkles!

The finished product. They look so pretty.

Eating the leftover icing. YUM.

The girls also brought a Christmas crossword puzzle for the students.

Be sure to ask your child what the meaning is behind Christmas Cookies and what they did with theirs today!

Have a wonderful weekend!!

"Cone Sweet Home"

We continued our study of seeds this week. On Wednesday, we took a look at cones and the different types of trees (conifers) which they come from. We also learned that they open and close to protect their seeds. Again, an amazing Creator with intentional detail!

"Nesting" Time!

Last week, our story for the week was called Urban Roosts. We have been learning about different kinds of wildlife which can be found in the city. Urban Roosts discussed the many different places where birds' nests can be found. We talked about what kinds of things birds use to make their nests such as sticks, trash, shoelaces and even candy wrappers. We decided it would be a good idea to make our own. :-)

First, we melted chocolate and peanut butter chips for the base to hold our nest together.

Next we added frosted flakes, which made our nests look like they were made up of a lot of different items.

Then, we found a nice place for our nests to form using tin foil and a muffin pan.

We poured our nests into their little homes.

Lastly, we added our eggs and let the nests harden. They tasted DELICIOUS!

Gabriel's Post

In third grade we count by 9's, 8's, 7's, 6's, 5's, 4's, 3's, 2's, and 10's. We have to learn them for multiplication.

Seeds are Sprouting and Flower Power!

We are studying the Life Cycle of PLANTS in Science right now. We learned about the three parts to a seed-

1. Seed Coat
2.  Stored Food
3. Embryo

So we broke apart some lima beans to check out the actual parts and see if we could label them.

Our scientists hard at work....

We then placed them in baggies with damp paper towels to watch them SPROUT. However, for some reason, they did NOT sprout. But it's all part of the experiment RIGHT?

*********************************************************************

So this following week, we studied more seeds. We had the chance to count, compare and observe the seeds of an ORANGE, an APPLE and a POMEGRANATE.

The students got their hands dirty (notice the art smocks) with those Pomegranate seeds! There were HUNDREDS in each half!

There was a secretary for each group who took notes on the amount of seeds, what they looked like and comparisons between the different fruits.

How could we do this activity and not eat those YUMMY POMEGRANATE seeds? Many of the students had never tasted them before, so this was a first.

*************************************************************************

And yesterday, we took apart a FLOWER.
The students learned about the three main parts to a flower:
1. Petal
2. Stamen
3. Pistil

The students had to draw their flower on paper and label any part they could see.

Next, they ripped off the petals and drew the center of the flower, in detail.

Poor, pretty flower.

The students made observations about each part of the flower. They successfully found the petals, pistil and stamen. They also shook the pollen out onto a white piece of paper.

The third graders sure are working hard!
Have a wonderful weekend!!

More Christmas FUN!

In preparation for our Christmas concert, the second and third graders made ornaments which were hung on a tree (or in our case- wreaths!). The boys made snowflakes out of marshmallows and toothpicks and the girls made Poinsettia flowers out of coffee filters, red paint and pipe cleaners.

They turned out pretty cute!!

Before our Christmas concert, we had some fun taking pictures in the classroom. We missed Steven the night of the concert, but everyone else was there!!

A normal one! :-)

The students did AMAZING during the concert!

They even played their recorders to "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"!
Great Job Third Grade!

What a fantastic concert. It was an exciting time to celebrate the season of Christmas and the birth of our Savior!
